How else would you engage the world on this earthly plane other than through this temporal capsule, this bag of bones wrapped in a skin membrane we call a body, which delineates us from one another? It is through this precious body that we find our place on Earth and our connection
to nature and to the creatures & places around us
to each other and to the social systems that surround us
to ourselves and to the health and inner life within us
Beyond culture, beyond differences, biology is what unites us. We are multidimensional beings rooted in a physical body on this short life’s journey. Over a lifetime, from cradle to grave, we grow to understand ourselves within the orchestration of many layered realms at once.
How is it that you synchronize your neurochemistry, the state of your physical health or dis-ease, your emotional body, your mental constructs & self-understanding? How do you live the divine spark that ignites you in real time, moment by moment, in every breath & every step you take?
Beyond opinion, beyond belief, beyond ideology, how do you discern the divine nature of reality? It is only by anchoring the body in the present now that we can begin exploring these questions.
Like the rings of a tree marking its growth, the body re-members the core of its own healing. Traditional approaches to self-understanding emphasize our mental capacitities, focusing on talking about our experiences which, while helpful in gaining insight into our situation, often results in “getting ahead” of ourselves, and leaving the body behind. In somatic psychotherapy, we add the dimension of listening to the body’s innate intelligence as it guides us through the sensations it sends, to the direct experiencing our inner truths, surfacing the buried stories that no longer define who we are.
The bonds of affection that develop between an infant and a caregiver form the emotional root of our sense of self and how we relate to others as we grow. The felt sense of being loved is wired in the internal circuitry of our body and becomes the springboard from which we engage, in delight & curiosity with the world around us.
Emotions are chemically woven into the fabric of our body. As infants & children, when our physical and emotional needs are ignored, our survival instincts mobilize to respond to the threat of abandonment or annihilation. Inexpressible feelings of fear, rage, helplessness and loss, translated through biochemical messenger molecules in our body, can remain stuck in the memory of our cells, joints, blood, muscles, glands, digestive tract, and in our nervous and immune systems, until they are released. In such instances of preverbal trauma, touch can be most effective in communicating to the body that the danger has passed & that we are now safe.
Giving birth and facing mortality are rites of passage, which most challenge us into coming to terms with Life. Regardless of the circumstances of our birth or the challenging conditions of our upbringing, our parents are the conduits of the Life that comes through to us, and in turn to the children we may bear. Revisiting our family legacy can release the unacknowledged and disowned secrets that continue to tie families in knots, which are often subconsciously handed down through the generations. Understanding the lessons of our origins is directly related to our ability to embrace Life itself, to open to our joy, accept the gifts of our lineage and engender the well-being of the children who will grow to replace us. As adults now, we have an opportunity to heal those wounds, to kindle our creative spark and restore our kinship to others.
It is our mother tongue. It is the language of babies, a wordless and sentient vibratory language of sensory/motor impulses, of temperature fluctuations, of cellular resonances to the prime caregiver, before baby moves into the manifest destiny of speech, with words like “dog” or “mama”, to find a rightful place within the familial, social and cultural conditioning.
Feelings can be fluid, joyful, unruly, peaceful, tempestuous, uproarious, as unpredictable as the ocean's surface on any given day. Sometimes when we are frightened or overwhelmed, we freeze, deny, bury or sweep the feelings away. How we negotiate the waves, the highs and the lows, the lulls and the crests, the early morning ocean stillness, is a delicate balance of the inner life within us, and our outer relationships in world.
Words are living entities. They allow us to time travel. Using a word awakens the memory, the frames of reference, the mindsets, the age & the emotional states of all those who’ve ever spoken that word before. If words mattered, if they had creative power, if what you said sooner or later, within a nanosecond or a millennium became material reality, what would you choose to say? In what direction would you speak?
Energy preceeds form. Vibration is at the root of how we come to create anything as human beings in the density of our three dimensional material world, whether an idea, a dream, an intuition, a body. We breathe, but that’s only half of the story. We are being breathed by the primary respiration of a Life Source that unites us all as living beings on this planet.
